Poverty Workshop Announcement:

Reconciling Rural Poverty Reduction and Resource Conservation

A major international workshop will be held on the campus of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA, from May 2- 3, 2003.

The two-week Ithaca component of the Bioeconomic Modeling Course for Smallholder Systems has been completed. Check the web sites below for information, updates, and photos from the successful session.

The 2002-03 BASIS work plan has been filed with the BASIS ME at University of Wisconsin. The document is accessible from below, and it also catalogued in the "Publications" section of this web site.

A new web site has been created for a Bioeconomic Modeling Course. This course is being offered for scientists at FOFIFA, ICRAF and KARI who have responsibilities for policy and technology analysis. The course is administered by the Cornell University Dept. of Applied Economics and Management in conjunction with the USAID BASIS CRSP project.

Dr. Bernard Okumu receives the Outstanding Research Silver Medal from the World Bank:

Last December, Dr. Bernard Okumu of Cornell University was awarded an Outstanding Research Silver Medal by the World Bank during the Global Development Network Conference held in Tokyo (10th - 13th December 2000). This award was for his research paper entitled "Technology and Policy Impacts on Economic Performance, Nutrient Flows and Soil Erosion at Watershed Level: The Case of Ginchi in Ethiopia". The medal is announced and presented by Mr. Kiichi Miyazawa, Minister of Finance, Japan, while the Chair of the Selection Committee: Dr. Joseph Stiglitz (Stanford University) presides.

A new web site has been created for the USAID BASIS CRSP Project, “Rural Markets, Natural Capital and Dynamic Poverty Traps in East Africa. The site contains information about the program, participant information, the project proposal, policy briefs and meeting information.
