African Food Security and Natural Resources Management Program (Cornell
University)
The African Food Security and Natural Resources Management (AFSNRM) is a
new thematic, interdisciplinary program started by the Cornell International
Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD) late in the spring
of 2000 with an initial geographic focus on eastern and southern Africa.
The aim of this initiative is to advance interdisciplinary research, training
and outreach integrating the biology of multispecies, agrosilvopastoral
systems with the economics of farmer behavior as influenced by market and
nonmarket institutions and the broader policy environment. One of the primary
current projects of AFSNRM is development of the CLASSES (Crop, Livestock
and Soils in Smallholder Economic Systems) model, a systems dynamics approach
to integrated stochastic, dynamic modeling of these complex adaptive systems.

Rural Markets, Natural Capital and Dynamic Poverty Traps in East Africa
(Cornell University)
The goal of this project is to identify best-bet strategies to help smallholders
escape the interrelated problems of dynamic poverty traps and natural resource
depletion. Degradation of soils and market access are the primary focis. Empirical
analysis, based on field work in six sites, four in Kenya and two in Madagascar,
and context-driven simulation modeling will be used to identify the most promising
approaches to poverty alleviation and repletion of degraded soils. This website
contains participant contact information, the project proposal, information
on the team meetings, select publications and organization links.
