Rural Markets, Natural Capital and Dynamic Poverty Traps in East Africa
A project within the African Food Security and Natural Resources Management Program

This project is being undertaken in collaboration with FOFIFA, KARI, and ICRAF in Kenya and Madagascar.
The goal of this project is to identify best-bet strategies to help smallholders escape the interrelated problems of dynamic poverty traps and natural resource depletion. Degradation of soils and market access are the primary focus.
Empirical analysis, based on field work in six sites, four in Kenya and two in Madagascar, and context-driven simulation modeling will be used to identify the most promising approaches to poverty alleviation and repletion of degraded soils.
