Businesses are recruiting leaders—well-rounded, dynamic individuals who exhibit strong leadership qualities in personal awareness, diversity appreciation, effective communication skills, and community involvement.  The BOLD Leadership Certificate is an opportunity for undergraduate students to attain leadership confidence and competency at the personal, group, and organizational/community level. 

Participants will be assigned a faculty “leadership mentor” who will work with the student to find appropriate leadership experiences and verify that the requirements of each of the following competency levels have been met. Workshops and Speaker Series require preapproval and attendance must be verified by the mentor.

COMPETENCY 1: PERSONAL LEVEL
Demonstrate leadership competency at the personal level.
Achieve competency in personal awareness (your ethics and value system, learning and interpersonal style, etc.) by earning a total of 3 points. (Points are listed after each activity.) Examples are:
Attend a Leadership Conference. (2 Points)
Write a short paper analyzing leadership experiences in an internship, class, or organization. (1 Point)
Attend an approved student organization leadership workshop. (2 Points)
Take an ethics class such as PHIL 241: Ethics; PHIL 246: Ethics and the Environment; GOVT 491: Ethics and International Relations; NBA 671: Business Ethics
Take at least one additional leadership course with content on personal leadership styles and theories (must be two credits in total). Examples with corresponding credit hours are:
Leading Teams and Organizations, NBA 668 (3 credits)
Perspectives on Leadership, NBA 670 (1.5 credits)
Goal Setting for Personal and Leadership Success (1.5 credits)
Leadership in Organizations, ILROB 627 (4 credits)
Managerial Leadership in the 21st Century, HADM 415 (1 credit)
Collaborative Leadership, HE 301 (4 credits)
Women, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship, AEM 3340 (1 credit)
COMPETENCY 2: GROUP LEVEL
Demonstrate leadership competency at the group level.
Hold a leadership position (e-board level or equivalent) and write a short paper reflecting on the experience, to include a recommendation from the organization’s advisor or suitable peer.  Examples are:
AEM Ambassadors
Professional Student Organizations
Greek System
Athletic Team
Outdoor Education Leadership
Demonstrate communication skills.  Must earn a total of 3 points. (Points listed after each activity.)
TA for course (3 Points)
Offer public presentation (e.g., conference, seminar, board meeting) (2 Points)
Attend a workshop or presentation focusing on communication skills (1 Point)
Complete an Oral Communications course (3 Points) such as COMM 301: Business and Professional Presentation; COMM 310: Communication and Decision Making in Groups;  or COMM 284: Sex, Gender, and Communication
Display evidence of experience in a diverse environment, by preparing a presentation/paper discussing this experience in the context of leadership and diversity lessons (if student has not already attended a course to fulfill this competency). Must earn a total of 3 points (Point totals listed after each activity.) Examples are:
Volunteer/work with a group different from yourself (2-3 Points, depending on commitment level)                    
Attend a conference, workshop or Speaker Series on diversity (2 Points)
Ethnics Studies Course (e.g., Asian American Studies; Latino American Studies; Africana Studies; Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Jewish Studies; Lesbian, Bisexual and Gay Studies) (3 Points)
PHIL 193: Inequality, Diversity & Justice (3 Points)
Participate in International Service Learning Trip such as the Emerging Markets Field Course trip (3 Points)
Markets Field Course trip (3 Points)
COMPETENCY 3: ORGANIZATIONAL & COMMUNITY LEVEL
Demonstrate competency at the community involvement level.
Participate in a substantial community service project and prepare a presentation for AEM 1020 describing the experience. Project must be preapproved by your leadership mentor and verified after completion.  Examples are:

Attend AEM’s Senior Decathalon Case Study competition.
