What Courses Do Freshmen Typically Take?

Below is a typical schedule for freshman AEM majors. Because of your differing interests and Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate results, no two schedules will be the same. After all, at Cornell we embrace Ezra Cornell's vision to found an institution where "any person can find instruction in any study."

You must complete a total of 120 credits to graduate, so the average course load is 15 credits a semester. One must carry 12 credits each semester to be a full-time student.

Fall Semester
AEM 1101: Introduction to Applied Economics and Management (1 credit)
AEM 1200: Introduction to Business Management (3 credits)
ECON 1110: Introductory Microeconomics or ECON 1120: Introductory Macroeconomics (3 credits)*
First-Year Writing Seminar (3 credits)*
Introductory Life Sciences (for Non-Life Sciences Major, 3 credits)* or Humanities (3 credits)* or Physics or Chemistry Requirement* (3 credits)
Physical Education Requirement
Spring Semester
AEM 1102: Personal Evaluation and Development (1 credit)
ECON 1110 or ECON 1120 (3 credits)*
First-Year Writing Seminar (3 credits)
Introductory Life Sciences (for Non-Life Sciences Major, 3 credits, 3 credits)*

How Your First Semester Schedule Is Created top

You will be assigned a faculty advisor during the month of July.

Course pre-enrollment requests for new students will begin July 20, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and end on July 29, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. EDT. Pre-enrollment is not guaranteed; course selection will be confirmed after August 1. To gain access to course enrollment, go to the Student Center and enter your enrollment requests starting on July 20.

Following AEM's new-student orientation when you arrive in August, you will meet with your faculty advisor to make adjustments to that schedule. We'll factor in your AP results and make changes based on your career and personal interests.

If you decide to make any changes to your schedule, you will then be able to add or drop courses before the semester begins, and for some time after the semester begins. So, the schedule you create during the summer before your freshman year is not written in stone. It's just a starting point!

If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to e-mail Professor Dale Grossman, AEM's director of undergraduate advising, or call Arla Hourigan (Ph: 607.255.4695), our undergraduate program coordinator.

Congratulations again on your acceptance into Applied Economics and Management. You are the best of the best and we're excited for you to join us!
