Overview

Our Mission

Develop undergraduates into the most effective and sought-after future business leaders and economists

Cornell University’s Department of Applied Economics and Management provides a broad-based educational experience where learning and development are driven by a global, real-world perspective, high-impact, innovative teaching, leading-edge research, and industry outreach.

Central Principles

Attract the Best and Make Them Better. We attract students with the highest potential for effective career and personal leadership. We develop well-rounded, ethical graduates whose mastery of business and economics skills is further strengthened by their interaction with and open access to the premier Ivy League community that is Cornell University.

Offer Career-Critical Courses. We create and continuously improve a challenging liberal arts–based curriculum that holistically focuses on applied economics, analytical and communication skills, critical decision-making techniques, and leadership capabilities to equip today’s students to become the most sought-after leaders in tomorrow’s global community.

Make the Real World Our Classroom. We integrate business and economics leaders, contemporary situations, and real-world projects throughout our curriculum.

Embrace an Active Learning Environment. We engage our students through innovative, hands-on teaching, collaborative teamwork, the use of cutting-edge information technologies, and immersion in diverse business and economics settings.

Provide Individual Development. We give our students the best opportunity to develop their own career path through a broad choice of courses, faculty access and advising, alumni mentoring, internships, study abroad, and the widest variety of career opportunities.

Expand Businessand Economics Research and Knowledge. We aggressively pursue applied research whose results will have an immediate and profound impact on business leaders, management scholars, policymakers, and students.

Core Values

We believe in the value of good judgment and strong character based on personal value systems of honesty, openness, and ethics.

We believe in diversity and appreciate how it enriches the personal and professional lives of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

We believe a person’s individual innovation and perseverance combined with the ability to work in a collaborative team environment are essential to success.

We believe in continuously challenging our excellence with an honest evaluation of our results based on graduates’ business success, market recognition, resource growth, and faculty and staff job satisfaction and professional growth.

We believe in meaningful introspection where the faculty, administrators, students, and alumni are provided a structure to recognize excellence, express constructive criticism, and evaluate resource utilization priorities.

We believe in industry outreach and community service, consistent with Cornell University’s mission as a leading land grant university.

My experience in the Undergraduate Business Program prepared me for the challenges one faces in a dynamic marketplace.
The ability to make critical split-second decisions is based on one's educational foundation and work experiences. Cornell provided me with a rock to build from. The architects were the outstanding faculty and my fellow students who taught me how to think.
